For those who forget to unplug the charger for a smartphone or laptop

There are gadgets in every home. While not every family has a laptop, almost everyone has a smartphone. Laptops and smartphones are designed with rechargeable batteries that need to be charged. There are chargers for this.

Why is it necessary to always unplug chargers from the outlet?

1. Electricity consumption. When the charger is not in use for its intended purpose, but is plugged in, it continues to operate and consume electricity. This state is called “quiescent current,” i.e., a minimum amount of current is consumed while remaining operational and available for operation. Check your smartphone charger, which was left in the socket, it will be slightly warm, sometimes barely noticeable. And from a laptop, I noticed that the power supply will be many times warmer under the same conditions (not connected to the laptop, only to the outlet).

Don’t worry, this consumption is minimal, the meter won’t add up much. On the other hand, there is still consumption. Why pay for electricity that you didn’t actually use? It’s better to unplug it, put it in a drawer and close this issue.

2. Mechanical damage. Leaving the charger in the outlet increases the chances of physical damage to it. Everything here is elementary simple, someone has small children or pets at home. In most cases, they will be very happy to play with the stray wire, eventually damaging it. You should also not exclude other ways of damage, such as pinching the wire with a door or drawer, somehow touching the charger with your foot, and the like. It is better to charge the gadget and put the charger in a drawer.

3. Fire hazard. In general, the risks are minimal if you use original chargers. But they still exist. What if you use cheap, uncertified Chinese analogues? What if the power supply or cable has some kind of mechanical damage? It’s better to charge the gadget and put it in a drawer.

4. Reduced service life. This point can be partially attributed to the second point. Under normal operating conditions, even if you forget to unplug the device, it will last a long time. Mechanical damage, power surges and the gadgets themselves are more influential here. If you charge a device with a faulty charge controller, the charger can easily fail.

In any case, it is better to unplug the charger from the outlet. With laptops it is more difficult, or rather more inconvenient when disconnected. In this case, you need to make sure that the socket to which the charger will be connected is not in a hard-to-reach place, for example, somewhere under the table.
